A Look at Some of the Most Architecturally Amazing Courthouses in the U.S.

May 12, 2016

When many people think of courthouses, they think of the legal system, traffic tickets, or judges in black robes. While these are all reasonable things to think of, they overlook the fact that many courthouses are architecturally quite spectacular. Many courthouses have been redesigned to maintain their historic status, but with an eye towards sustainability and modernity. Read on for a look at just a few of the many architecturally astounding courthouses in the country.

U.S. Post Office and Courthouse, Brooklyn, New York

The original building was completed in 1892 in a Romanesque Revival style, with spires extending upwards towards the sky. In 1933, an extension was added in the same style to preserve a uniform look. Renovations began in 1999 to bring the building up to modern standards, and making sure an atrium brought plenty of natural light to the space. This courthouse, located in Downtown Brooklyn, has been the recipient of many awards including a 2008 GSA Preservation Design Honor Award.

U.S. Federal Courthouse, Jackson, Mississippi

The initial courthouse in Jackson was a 1930s-era building designed in the Art Deco style, but its predecessor is significantly different. The new building was designed by H3 Hardy Collaboration Architecture, and boasts 12 courtrooms and 16 judges’ chambers in its sprawling 400,000 square foot blueprint.

U.S. Courthouse, Springfield, Massachusetts

The heart of New England is a prime location for a courthouse that owes as much to the past as it looks towards the future. This courthouse, designed by Safdie Architects, features a curved colonnade entry that is reminiscent of classic courthouse design, but executed with a modern style. A 200-foot mural by artist Sol LeWitt adorns the courthouse, making it even more visually compelling. Designers kept the site’s natural elements in mind, and heritage trees can be seen from various places within the building.
