Birck Nanotechnology Center 10th Anniversary
December 21, 2015Birch Nanotechnology Building was completed in 2005. While affiliated with HDR, Matt Sears was the Project Designer and Tom Gerbo was the Laboratory Designer. It is a 185,000 interdisciplinary building containing labs, cleanrooms, seminar space and offices. Matt Sears attended the anniversary celebration this October in West Lafayette, IN. The building has endured the test of time and is functioning as it was intended in the original design.
The following information was provided by Purdue University Discovery Park:
The BNC Concept
- Engaging interdisciplinary , societal-scale challenges and opportunities in healthcare, information access, energy and the environment with approaches enabled by nanoscale science and engineering.
- Community encompassing a very broad span of disciplines in the same space. 3- Best facility and tools.
- Fluid.. no ownership of space.
- Sustainable financial model.
There are over 160 affiliated faculty representing 25 academic departments. There are 420 “users” from 117 different research groups so this is a very multidisciplinary and collaborative facility. We are happy to have had a part in creating the kind of space that makes the kind of work that they do possible.
Major research themes include: NanoPhotonics (metamaterials), Computational Nanotechnology (home of NSF nanoHUB), NanoElectronics (Carbon/Graphene, 2D electronics), Bio-Nonotechnology (with Bindley Bioscience Center), MEMS/NEMS, Nano metrology (RF and Sensors), Nano-Energy (thermal/thermoelectrics, batteries), Nano Health/Safety (Weaver/Jurss). New initiatives for the center are Nano-manufacturing, In-vivo, In-vitro devices, and discovery to commercialization.
